The Lord's Prayer Pattern

The Lord's Prayer Pattern is found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. When the disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray", He responded with this prayer.

1Relationship: “Our Father in heaven...” – Express your appreciation to God for the love relationship you enjoy with Him.

2. Worship: “…hallowed be your name..” – Ask the Holy Spirit to identify one or more names of God that you can adore in your heart and implore on behalf of others.

Elohim – God the Creator

El Elyon – God the Most High; the sovereign  ruler of all the universe

El Roi – The God who sees

El Shaddai – All Sufficient One

Jehovah – “I AM”; The Self-Existent One

Jehovah Jireh – The Lord will provide

Jehovah Rapha – The Lord who Heals

Jehovah Nissi – The Lord is My Banner

Jehovah Mekaddishkem – The Lord who  sanctifies

Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is Peace

Jehovah Raah – The Lord is My Shepherd

Jehovah Tsidkenu – The Lord is my Righteousness

Jehovah Shammah – The Lord is There

Jehovah Rohi – The Lord is my shepherd

3. Lordship: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” – Ask Jesus to bring  His kingly rule into your own life, your family, friends, church, city, and nation.

4. Sonship: “Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,...” – God loves us to live in dependence upon Him.  He is our provider for both physical and spiritual needs.  Just as it is humbling every day to receive physical and spiritual provision form God, so it is equally humbling and necessary to come and receive forgiveness.  God wants us to keep short accounts with Him.

5. Fellowship: “…as we also have forgiven our debtors.” – Now that we are freshly forgiven, we can extend grace, forgiveness and acceptance to those who have wronged us.  This is an altogether essential element in prayer – pull up any weeds of bitterness or resentment from your heart.

6.  Leadership: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” – Often we jump into prayer begging for God’s guidance.  However, how much better it is now that we have processed through the Lord’s Prayer Pattern to come this point of being able to receive His guidance.  We need to know His word, so we can follow Him.

7.  Ownership: “For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”  Conclude with the realization that it all starts with God and it all ends with God.
